Fujitsu to Introduce 250GB and 300GB 2.5" Notebook Hard Drives in early 2007
Fujitsu today announced a new breakthrough in hard drive capacity storage for the 2.5" notebook sized hard drive. The MHX2300BT series of mobile hard disk drives (HDDs) will begin shipping in early 2007 and offer storage capacities of 250GB and 300GB. Fujitsu is using perpendicular magnetic recording technology to achieve this increased capacity on such a small sized drive. The drives also feature low power consumption (1.6W), high shock tolerance and near-slient operation. Here are the stats on the new ultra-high capacity hard drive from Fujitsu:
- Capacity: 250/300GB
- Rotational Speed: 4200 RPM
- Interface: SATA 2.5, ATA-8
- DIPM and HIPM Supported
- Native Command Queuing
- Staggered Spin Up & Active LED Supported
- Hot Plug
- Best in Class Read / Write Power Consumption: 1.6W typ.
- Idle Power Consumption: 0.5W typ.
- Track to Track Seek Time: 1.5ms typ.
- Host Transfer rate: 150MB/s max.
- Operating Shock: 300G (2ms)
HP and Cingular Wireless introduce first global mobile broadband notebook PC in U.S.
HP and Cingular Wireless today announced the first notebook PC in the United States to feature built-in global mobile broadband capabilities. The HP Compaq nc6400 (see nc6400 review) business-class notebook PC can be equipped with Cingular Wireless UMTS/HSDPA-based technology, which allows for broadband connections to the Internet without being tied to an access point in over 115 countries where networks are available.
The HP Compaq nc6400 will be jointly marketed by HP and Cingular Wireless. The nc6400 with integrated Cingular Wireless BroadbandConnect is slated to be available at the end of December, starting at $1,599. Unlimited BroadbandConnect service is $59.99, with available International plans.
Quanta Computer sees 10% increase in notebook shipments
Quanta Computer shipped 2.2 million notebooks in November, a 10% increase from October's 2.0 million.
Shipments from other manufacturers in November included 1.74 million from Compal Electronics, and 900,000 from Asustek. Wistron shipped 1.04 million, and Inventec 880,000.
Real Cost of OLPC XO almost $1,000 according to report
According to a report, the OLPC XO $100 laptop could end up costing over $900. Originally, the OLPC XO machine had a $100 target price, although later on that price grew to $140. Now, analysts say that the true cost, including hidden costs not actually associated with the hardware, of the OLPC could end up being over $900.
Other factors contributing to cost besides the manufacturing include shipping and packaging. Another cost would be having teachers trained to use the laptops. Training is very important to the success of OLPC. Repairs, insurance, theft, and training will cause costs to go up.
Compared to a standard laptop, the OLPC XO is much less. Competition from Intel's Classmate PC and Encore Software's Mobilis Tablet will help drive costs down.

Wow! The XPS certainly does have it all now.
And with the OLPC program, of course the cost will be higher than just the hardware. Most of the notebooks are getting sent to regions where computer literacy is not high (or non-existant) and people will have to be trained regardless of the computer specs. The OLPC program just makes it that much more feasible to deliver the wonders of technology to the disadvantaged.

250/300gb @ 4200 rpm is too slow. Notebooks containing these harddisks won't need core 2 duo 7xxx or amd turion x2 5x. A Sempron processor should be ok for these notebooks.

Wow, I just started liking the nc6400 a little more. Not that I would need it, but just knowing global wireless is available on a system I already like is fantastic.
Disappointing how the prices on these "low-cost" notebooks are getting hiked up. $900 per laptop is quite high. $100 for hardware + $800 for maintenance & training? Ouch. And I thought the $400 Intel notebook was too expensive. But I guess a certain level of infrastructure is necessary to get the program to function properly.

The price of that M1710 with Blu-Ray is off the charts, $3,699 with Blu-Ray. It's sure worth waiting for prices to fall when it comes to new media technology.

Actually, those gigantic hard drives would serve a good purpose in "deep storage" for those of you who have a dual hard drive system. Even though they are 4200RPM, I'm guessing that the data density would help to offset the performance hit.
The XPS M1710 just continues to go more and more extreme...
Did anyone notice that HPs flagship notebook has a HD-DVD drive??? :D
Seriously though, I'm going to wait before going high def until a few of my thoughts and/or fears are proven or disproven. This tech is still relatively unknown and new. Betamax/VHS war anyone?
Amazing...truly a World Wide Web now...:) If only the prices were lower and the speeds greater...then I'd check this one out.

The price on that Dell XPS is over the roof. I myself am not investing in either Blu-ray or HD DVD anytime soon. When (if) one becomes dominant, then I will consider it.
For $3,700, I would pick up a Sager NP5960, which is the world's fastest gaming notebook. AMD Turion X2 dual-core processor, 20.1" display, DDR2 dual-channel RAM, dual hard drives with available RAID, and dual 512MB GDDR3 Nvidia Go7950GTX video cards in SLI.

Now that's a force to be reckoned with. ;)

There will be a time when you can hook your $200 mobile phone directly to your hdtv, standard keyboard. replacing the need for laptop.

Personally, I don't think so. HDTVs aren't portable like laptops are, and you can't get an optical drive or decent GPU in a cell phone anyway.
BTW: Mobile Palm Phones already do a little bit but the market is a small niche at best.
